Originators of Ypsilanti-Style Turbo Crust Metal
With the help of the intern-et, anyone can create a genre! Stealth-promotion is self-promotion, kind of the opposite of Sigue Sigue Sputnik selling ad space on their records.

A store is opening in Ypsilanti that claims to be purveyors of "Ann Arbor style cheesecake". What the Hell is Ann Arbor Style cheesecake? It doesn't matter, because it's a made up term (like all terms). Made up, possibly by its creators to take advantage of Ann Arbor's previously, notorious high self-image (an image that, sadly, loses steam about 10 miles outside the township limits).

www.annarborstylecheesecakes.com is a dead domain, but Goog reveals one other reference in the world to such a "style". Someone managed to add it to a cheesecake wiki, but had its picture yoinked (a picture that doesn't help)

Using the above technique and the memory of a sign we saw in a Wheeling, WV pizza shop, Chapstik is now declaring itself the originator of a genre of heavy music heretofore known as:
Ypsi-Style Turbo Crust

That said, Negative Approach (originators of Midwest Hardcore) just played live on NYC's WFMU to adoring DJs. They vidded the whole set, nice.

UPDATE:
---the website / domain is working again and the cheesecakes are made light and fluffy using the famous Ann Arbor air of superiority!

All snarkiness aside, I truly wish the Cheesecake purveyors the best and will happily gain 10lbs soon.

What's the store opening in Ypsi?

And yeah, what people said in the a2/ypsi community... I've lived in this area more or less for 28 years, and while I don't like cheesecake, I imagine I would have at least come across it once in that time. Not the case.

I think it's a catering business / storefront on Huron next to World of Beads.

Ann Arbor Style Cheesecake... I see a nude girl in a brand-new Smart Car, flirtatiously sipping a half-caf skinny Frappuchino with rainbow sprinkles.

Nude and about 50lbs overweight (which might be at total of 300lbs, so shut up).

Marky gets hassled too at the bakery, but no one has jammed him up over it yet. I don't know how hard they are trying to keep cheesecake production out of downtown, but it's on the radar.

Yeah, we don't want all those dangerous cheesecake junkies hanging outside waiting for the place to open!

The Zoning rules for storefronts downtown demand a certain amount of retail sale.

The Terry Bakery REALLY needs to be open almost every day... I usually want donuts on days they aren't open, though they have been open a few more hours a week now, and were even open on the 2nd friday of May, in the evening.

As the city consultants said "no part-time business owners". Be open, or leave downtown.

They do a lot of catering still? Maybe that kind of counts, but they might as well be a law firm with locked doors.

I rarely eat doughnuts, but leaving the Elbow at 3am Terry'd be in full grease and sugar production and I wanted one the next day. No luck.

This is one of those wonky pieces of the zoning ordinance - an office can be almost completely not open to the public or have any retail character (Illuminart comes to mind), but a non-restaurant "food production" business is permitted only on the condition that 50% of the product is sold at retail from the premises.

Leighton, you mention over on MM.com that Old World's c/o was being held up over zoning issues - speaking as the person who would be holding it up, I can tell you that's not the case; he got zoning approval a week or so ago. I treated him the same Queen of Hearts - there's no way we can verify that 50% of their business (by items? by value? by customers?) is "retail", but their front doors are open, they do offer sales to walk-in customers, and a lot of their special order cakes, etc, involve at-store pickups. Old World Bakery provided a statement that his biz quacked like retail, and he got zoning approval.

Not sure what the story is with Terry Bakery or Angel Food Catering; they pre-date my time at the City. I generally get my doughnuts from Dom's, though, as they're the ones who are open when I want doughnuts, and I think that's the point/intent of the requirement in the zoning for retail sales - to get businesses that people are going to go to when they want doughnuts (or whatever) and help build critical mass of in-person traffic for other businesses. How well it works, can't tell you, but I know a fair number of open-all-day business owners (in ypsi and elsewhere) who certainly /believe/ the no-foot-traffic businesses hurt them.

Good info, thanks.
There's a point where it might make more sense to make downtown into one big office park, with nightclubs taking the leftovers.

We could be pioneers:
The Ypsi-Style, Mullet School of Urban Planning. Business in the front, party in the back.

The cheesecakes at Bombadill's come from Old World Bakery, which is moving from its old location (which I think was out by A2 Airport), and to the new location on Huron St, near World of Rocks.
They make the "Ann Arbor Style Cheesecakes", which tend to be rather creamy in their mouth-feel, and not as firm as a New York Style, but not as fluffy as other styles.

I do not work for them, merely making an observation after tasting most of their flavours.

Sounds like a catering / supplier operation, like Zingermann's Bakehouse near the Airport, cool. Hope they don;t run into abipve mentioned zoning issues.

Now, all they need are vegan versions and Bombadil's can compete with the Ugly Mug.

Bombadill's already has (and has had) vegan+gluten free "cheese"cakes, which are usually made by their Barista Heather (a culinary student who can't eat sugar).

Currently being serves is the Mint Chocolate.

On 2nd thought, most processed sugar isn't vegan (bones used in the bleaching process or something gross like that), so it makes total sense to make some vegan desserts sugar-free, if just for the leery.

* Ann Arbor-style cheesecake
Old World Bakery in Ann Arbor, Michigan, features a graham cracker crust which covers both the bottom and the 8 cm (3 inch) high side of the cheesecake. It is also lighter and creamier in texture than other cheesecakes because of a combined cream cheese and sour cream base. Each cheesecake weighs an average of 2 to 3 kg (4-5 1/2 pounds) depending upon the flavour. It is also common to add liquor flavourings such as Bailey's Irish Cream, Amaretto, Raspberry Chambord, Kahlua, Wisniak cherry cordial, and Vandermint.
