Smoked out
[info]lily_larue alerts us: Michigan Senate OKs smoking ban in bars, restaurants...

Before contracting asthma working and performing in bars, I probably would have been a "live and let live" guy on the subject, but "wheeze and let wheeze" didn't work out for me or my cancer-magnet wife.

We catch up to Wheeling West Virginia! (and NYC and LA and Chicago and...) in realizing that it is a work / public health issue in some cases.

There's a political aspect to my position: Smoking sends money directly people who send money directly to people who want to make contraception illegal, and Southern Baptism the national religion ...etc.

Then there's the cosmetic aspect. Girls who smoke tend to look much older than their years and straight guys look all faggy holding a fag when they don't intend to. And they don;t look like the Marlboro Man... more like a fat Virginia Slim...
Case in Point:
Here's what DanG would look like if he smoked (from the article):

Of course, if they legalized pot only in bars... I still wouldn't smoke it, but I'd like the thench more.

Re: aging- true, but girls that smoke are almost always more generous (mean/jealous types might say 'sluttier') than girls who don't though. It's a helpful signifier.

Must... resist ...linking... the. act of...smoking's similarity to fellatio ... in female... (and male) smokers.

So, what you're saying is that you must take advantage of slutty smoking women while they are young, but when they get all haggy in their 30's... drop them and marry a nice smoke-free girl?

You sir,... are a dog.

They don't need C sections...
I'm going to use a horrible term here: courtesy stitch.

See, this is why I don't have kids... not really.

Smoking Bans Rule!

As a non-smoker myself I can't say that I'm terribly upset by this, but as a non-asthma suffer-er I will say that smoke does add a certain ambiance to your average dive bar that can never be replaced. When this ban goes in to place around here I will miss it.

I think indoor smoking bans are okay in southern states, but in the north you end up with crowds of hapless smokers huddling for warmth in the middle of winter.

It's a bad idea. They should have come up with some sort of licensing for indoor smoking kind of like a liquor license.

The last show I was at in NYC was Early Man with a bunch of neo-thrash bands..., no smoking, but it was still smoky...

They have found the solution, and Damon at the Elbow already has this covered: smoke machines. They add the sleazy ambiance without all that necessary future chemotherapy. Though I do think the gay gas makes you gay.

Hells yes! I am STOKED about the ban. Happy. Exstatic. I only hope the state House doesn't screw it up.

Smoking is the Devil. Seriously. See: Tassie's Mom in the dictionary for all the reasons why smoking sucks.

I have no sympathy for smokers, because eventually many of them will be in the hospital for smoking related diseases, perhaps in their old age, and it's my medicare money that will be paying for them.

Not to mention, I'm tired of sucking down all their extra smoke. It's a nasty, filthy, vile, disgusting, dangerous habit. Fuck smoking.

They were surprised it passed to heavily in the Senate. Maybe the House will get scared and follow suit?

I lost my dad to cigs, ...he was a doctor who knew the risks, yet he still smoked in CCU after his 3rd heart attack!

The Medicare cost issue is a great point. I often complain about uninsured idiots not wearing seatbelts. Maybe smokers and the unbelted should not get any govt. assistance?

I read an interesting article (that I don't have the link for on hand) that linked smoking bans to an increase in DUI arrests because people are driving farther to go to bars they can smoke in.

Here's how much sympathy I have for anyone who drives drunk for any reason, over any distance: 0.

Oh I'm not sympathizing with them at all, more so the rest of the people on the road.

It was just something I hadn't thought about.

Simple solution when there is a statewide ban: cops parked at the state lines waiting for the hardcore idiots.

I graduated high school with the guy (Andy) in the DetNews photo. Every time I think I'm getting old and look bad I just need to see that picture and I feel much better.

And a Family Guy quote, courtesy of Lois Griffin, sums up my feeling on the smoking ban: "Remember Chris - If she smokes, she pokes!"

Good thoughts and comments there.

I think of the bars in other cities that closed a year after such ordinances pass. They will be missed. Luckily, the Belmont doesn't fit their dive-y / smoke-y style and should be safe.
